Welcome back to another adventure! This time, we ventured out to Toorongo and Amphitheatre Falls, located near Noojee, about 90 minutes from Melbourne. With its scenic waterfalls and easy trail, it’s no surprise this spot is a favourite for day-trippers. But fair warning—if you’re visiting during a busy period like we did, be prepared for a lot of company.

Starting the Adventure
We arrived on a Sunday over the Christmas holidays, arguably one of the busiest times of the year. The Toorongo Park campground, located just before the falls carpark, was packed to capacity with hundreds of campers. The carpark itself was no different, overflowing with cars and people ready to explore.

As soon as we started the hike, it was clear why this spot is so popular. The trail is a short, family-friendly 2.3km loop, passing two stunning waterfalls along the way. The path runs alongside the river feeding the falls, offering a tranquil atmosphere despite the crowd. We even saw some people sitting on rocks in the river, enjoying the cool, rushing water.

The Trail Experience
The trail is well-maintained and accessible, making it suitable for all fitness levels. However, the sheer number of visitors made the walk feel slow and crowded. The narrow sections of the path meant frequent stops as others stopped for the views, which made it a bit challenging for Yuki. She’s not a fan of large crowds and was cautious as we passed large groups of people on the trail.

At the second waterfall, there’s a steel viewing platform that provides a great vantage point. However, the platform has large gaps, which can be tricky for dogs. We carried Yuki onto the platform so she didn’t miss out!

Tips for the Trip
If you’re planning to visit, timing is everything. While the waterfalls and trail are undeniably beautiful, the crowds can take away from the experience. If you’re looking for serenity, consider visiting during a quieter time.

For dog owners, the trail is manageable but busy. We used the Roam Wilder Long Line, but given the crowd, a shorter leash like the Roam Wilder Roam Your Way might be a better choice to maintain control.

Final Thoughts
Toorongo and Amphitheatre Falls is a perfect destination for families and casual hikers, offering an easy walk with beautiful scenery. The two waterfalls are stunning, and the riverside trail adds to the charm.

That said, if you’re looking for a quiet escape, this might not be the best choice—especially during peak holiday times. But if you’re after a short, scenic outing that’s accessible to all, it’s well worth the trip.

Happy hiking!
